Lauri Toivio has studied the flute and composing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and the Cologne University of Music in Germany, gaining his MMus degree in 2004.

Toivio has given premiere performances of a significant number of contemporary works. His compositional output has focused on large-scale works for varying chamber ensembles, including two chamber operas and an epic piano cycle "Earth”, one of the longest Finnish solo works.

Toivio has been nominated twice as ”The Composer of the Year” by the Finnish Publishers’ Association, and awarded multiple times by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Finnish state an artistic grant.
