Emil Holmström studies the piano at the Sibelius Academy under professor Erik T. Tawaststjerna and composing under Veli-Matti Puumala. He has participated in a few piano competitions: in 1996 he was a joint winner in the Ilmari Hannikainen competition and in Jurmala '98 competition in Latvia. In 2002 International Maj Lind competition Holmström reached the semi-final. Recently, he has performed regularly music by the Brazilian national composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. In the spring 2002 he played in the first international Villa-Lobos conference in Paris and in November 2002 had his own recital at the 40th Villa-Lobos Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Besides standard repertoire, Holmström plays a wide variety of contemporary music. He has given a few premières in various concerts. He played for the first time with the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble in 2000 and joined the ensemble more regularly in 2002.
