Juho Martikainen
Born 1974
Double-bassistJuho Martikainen began playing the double bass when aged nine. After studies in Kuopio Conservatory he continued at the Sibelius Academy under Jussi Javas. He has also taken part in a few master courses. Martikainen has worked as a freelancer in a.o. Mahler Chamber Orchestra as well as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, the Finnish National Opera and other major domestic orchestras. He took his diploma at the Sibelius Academy in 2001 with the highest possible grades.
Martikainen is an original member of the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble. He performs regularly with the double bass quartet Härkä (The Ox). He has participated in a few improvisation productions and plays frequently popular music, too. Martikainen teaches a.o. in the Helsinki Conservatory. In August 1998 he reached the final in the Edinburgh International Double Bass Competition.
