Hannu Pohjannoro
Born 1963
ComposerHe's never been an angry young man. He doesn't chase flashy success. Hannu Pohjannoro rather observes the world as a whole and comments on the beauty of its details.
Pohjannoro is a modernist well aware of tradition. He has constantly worn his coat without suddenly turning it. Intelligence, craftmanship and emotions entangle together in a subtle and delicate way in his music. His versatile output is well polished and in coherent line. Polishing is a feature, which can be seen in his manuscripts, regardless if it's question of work written with a lead pencil or scores of computer age. His musical expression has enlarged, got deeper and started forming longer lines in the turn of the millennium. However, the reduced lines in his miniature compositions familiar already from his educational years are still present. Pohjannoro's music is demanding. It requires a focused handling of the rhythm and richness of nuances in tone and articulation. From his listeners the composer doesn't however require wide musical education or ability to analyse or to “understand” – the point is to listen.
This is what a couple of critics have had to say:
“Pohjannoro's work demonstrates especially his capability and vision.” (Harri Hautala, Aamulehti, 1994)
”This is a quiet and seldom agited piece, even in the crescendo about midway through. ... Individual notes or clusters of notes glow or growl independently and yet flow with an appealing inner logic, direction and purpose that are missing in many contemporary works.” (William Ratcliff, San Francisco Classical Voice, 2000)
Pohjannoro studied composition at the Sibelius Academy with Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kalevi Aho and Paavo Heininen and graduated in 1996. In 1993 he went to Berlin and studied under Dieter Schnebel. At the moment he is working on his doctor degree at the Sibelius Academy. His music has been widely performed in Finland and abroad, in festivals and individual concerts of many major ensembles and orchestras.
