Roi Ruottinen started playing the cello when aged four. He studied at the Helsinki Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy and graduated in 1994 from Martti Rousi's class with highest possible grades. Ruottinen went on to study at the Royal Conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Thorleif Thedéen. He has participated in a few master courses.

Ruottinen won the Turku Cello Competion in 1994. This brought to him a break-through and gave him performances as soloist, recital and chamber musician. He has performed at all significant festivals in Finland. He has played as soloist and chamber musician in Europe, the United States, Asia and South America. Ruottinen has done a few recordings with recording companies, the radio and television. He teaches among at the Helsinki Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy. In 1999 Ruottinen won the Uussoitto competition for performers of contemporary music. This brought a lot of visits to play at various festivals as well in Finland as abroad. Ruottinen has commissioned and premièred a few works. His repertoire spans from baroque to the most contemporary as well as improvized music.
