Lauri Toivio is a founder member of the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble. He studied the flute at the Sibelius Academy under Ilpo Mansnerus and Petri Alanko, in Cologne, Germany, under András Adorján, and composing under Timo-Juhani Kyllönen. Toivio has won a.o. the Finnish flute society's Soloists competition and the Lahti wind competition. He has performed as a chamber musician and as soloist in Finland and abroad. He has given premières to a few Finnish new works. Toivio is the visualizer of the Uusinta Publishing Company.

Toivio's output consists so far mainly of large-scale chamber works, such as the Wind Quintet (1995), Pictures at an Exhibition (1999), a quartet for flute, violin, violoncello and piano, and Dance Scenes (2000) for flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano. As a composer Toivio fetches inspiration from the neo-expressionism. He is interested in freely-flowing music and strong structures. His music often has a clear pulse. As a musician himself he emphasizes idiomatic way of writing.
